WORTH THE EFFORT

Canon EOS REBEL XS, Promaster 19-35 @ 19mm, ISO 200, f/14, 5 sec.
As I noted in previous posts, the hike the hike to Spruce Flats Falls was a difficult one for me. The amount of rocks and ups & downs along the path were very hard on my knees and ankles. Not to mention that I am very much out of shape.
The wear and tear from the journey was well worth the effort though. Spruce Flats Falls wee almost like an oasis in the middle of the Smoky Mountains. I would imagine in the spring, when the water levels are high the pool below the falls can be swam in and would be very deep. It was waist deep  when we were there.
The canopy of trees keeps the sunlight off of the entire area other than maybe in the evening when the sun might be shining in on from down stream of the falls. Don't know this for sure, but it would be the only way sunlight could shine in.
Rhododendrons completely surround the water as well as huge moss-covered rocks. It was just a beautiful place.
The last 3 days we have gotten roughly 6" of rain so I would guess that the water flow is incredible compared to when Tim and I got there. That would be awesome to see. Maybe in a month or so, when the leaves change, we will go back and photograph the falls with color and a larger water flow. If we don't, there is always next spring.

  1. Amazing! Hunting waterfalls is such a fulfilling experience! :)

I've just started tracking down as many as I can find in the New England area, and yes let me be the first to say that it's incredible how different a waterfall can be after a good dosage of rain, just take a look at my post today (9/7/11) and compare it to the one linked within the post.

Same waterfall different days completely different scene!
